Gertrude Newton

Gertrude Newton, 87, of Matthews, N.C., died Friday, March 2, 2018 at Carolinas Hospice House.
She was born June 12, 1930 in Lake City, Ark. to the late William Henry Parnell and Katie Miranda Fields Parnell. She was a member of the Faith Tabernacle Pentecost Church.
Gertrude married Thurman E. Newton Nov. 23, 1947, in Paragould, Ark. He preceded her in death in 1997.
She worked as a homemaker for Butler County.
Gertrude is survived by one son, John Newton of Monroe, N.C.; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Annie Hefner and Mary Baker.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 8, at Fitch-Hillis Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. David Tharp will officiate. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery. Online condolences: fitchhillisfh.com
