George Stewart, 89, longtime resident of Butler County, passed away at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center on December 2, 2011. Mr. Stewart was born February 22, 1923 in Corpus Christi, Texas. He was a retired salesman after thirty-five years of working for Amoco Oil and enjoyed making bird houses, painting, and was very active with Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Stewart was also a member of the Holy Cross Episcopal Church and was a veteran of The United States Air Force. Over the years, Mr. Stewarts contributions were reconized through induction into the Brotherhood and Vigil Honor of the Order of the Arrow and through receipt of the Spearhead Award, the James West Fellowship Award, the Silver Beaver Award, and numerous mentor pins. Mr. Stewart opened, managed, and served on the board of directors for the Boy/Girl Scout Musuem and also began the Ten Commandment Walk, which is still practiced today. On June 28, 1971 he married Bonnie Elting in Harviell, Mo. She survives. Other survivors include one daughter, Elizabeth Duggar, of Oklahoma City, Ok; two stepsons, Danny Rhodes and wife Jackie, and Fredrick Rhodes and wife Patti, both of Poplar Bluff, Mo; two grandchildren, Teresa Murdock of Poplar Bluff, Mo. and Mathew Rhodes, of Valley Park, Mo; and two great grandchildren.
