Dr. Walker J. Long

Dr. Walker J. Long, age 93 of Poplar Bluff passed away on October 3, 2012. He was born in Leora Missouri on August 25, 1919. On June 18, 1944 he married Lettye Wood in Malden, Mo. His wife Lettye and one daughter, Lynn Long Flottman preceded him in death. He is survived by one sister, Ruth Guth of Michigan; three children, Dr. Jerry Long (Sarah), Kelly Long (Phyllis) and Lisa Long; 10 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Walker served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He continued his education after the war and graduated from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis in 1948. Dr. Long practiced in Poplar Bluff for more than 50 years. He was an active member of the Missouri Optometric Association serving as the state organization president from1973-1974 and holding numerous other offices. He was named Missouri Optometrist of the Year in 1979. He also was appointed to the State Board of Optometry and served as the president from 1975-1981. Dr. Long was involved in the community of Poplar Bluff, having served as a City Councilman and the Chairperson of the county Republican Party. He was a member of the Poplar Bluff Jaycees, the local Masonic Lodge, the Ad Grotto and the Three River's Shrine Club. He was also a member of the Poplar Bluff Lions Club from 1950 where he held numerous offices including the presidency. He started the local "Eye Glass Program" for needy children and families where he regularly donated his services. He was member of the First Baptist Church, past chairperson of the United Way and a Boys Scout Leader and volunteer. Dr. Long enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing and his "motor home" group. His prizewinning 56 pound catch still holds the World Record for Fresh Water Buffalo, caught on a rod and reel, with 10 lb. test line. Visitation will be Sunday, October 7, 2012 at Fitch-Hillis Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff at 1:00 P.M. with services following at 2:00 P.M. There will be a Masonic Service as well as a Lion's Club for eye research or th the Three River's Shrine Club to be used for their hospital program.
