Artie Mae Brewer Hillis, 89, died Tuesday, Jan.4, 2011 at Ratliff Care Center in Cape Girardeau, MO. Mrs. Hillis, daughter of the late Richard (Dick) Brewer and Mary (May) Waggoner Brewer was born Feb, 22, 1921. On Jan. 1, 1937, she married Thomas Nelson Hillis at Cash, AR. He preceded her in death on June 23, 1990. Artie was a farmer's wife and homemaker as well as the mother of six children. She was familiar with hard work-picking a lot of cotton and canning a lot of fruits and vegetables. She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Poplar Bluff, Mo and a former member of Providence Baptist Church in Marmaduke, AR. She was the oldest of five children and the only girl. She is survived by three brothers - Donald Brewer of Huntsville, AR, Leamon Brewer of Ash Flat, AR, and Freman Brewer of Cash, AR. John Richard (J.R.) Brewer preceded her in death. Surviving children include: Violet (Harold) Condray of Ellsinore, MO, Opal (Tom) Aden of Cape Giradeau, MO, Floyd (Jan) Hillis of Owensboro, KY, Henry Hillis of Hawaii, Ruth (Jerry) Jenkins of Nashville, TN. Twelve grandchildren include: Randy (Lisa) Marshall, Sheila (Ritchie) Calvert, Shannon (John) Poole of Poplar Bluff, MO, Anita Zimmerman of W. Palm Beach, FL, Byron (Dana) Aden of Cape Girardeau, MO, Bruce Aden of Afghanistan, Amy (Brian) Crafford of Paducah, KY, Michael Credille of Broseley, MO, Susan (Mel) McCarty of Columbus, MS, Will (Kerri) Hillis of Mt. Juliet, TN, Emma Hillis of Owensboro, KY. Also included are eighteen great grandchildren and three great, great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother - JR, and a daughter - Virgie (Mickey) Credille, and a granddaughter - Carla Credille Austin.
