Jewell Wetherington, 92, of Poplar Bluff, died Friday,
Jan.2,2014 at Cedergate Nursing Center. She was born
Nov. 16, 1922 to the late William David Way and Rone
Hutchins Way in Cruthersville, Mo. Burial at Memorial
Gardens in Kennett, Mo.
Donnell M. Johnson, 75, of Poplar Bluff, died Monday,
Jan. 5, 2015 at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. He
was born May 8, 1939 to the late Frank Johnson and Irma
Whitener Johnson in Gravelton, Mo. Donnell was a long
time resident of Poplar Bluff. He was a member of the
First General Baptist Church.
He married Gerri Allison Oct. 1, 1960. She preceded him
Before retiring, Donnell was a foreman for a bridge
construction company. He served in the United States
Army during the Korean War. He enjoyed collecting
rocks, and driving race cars in his younger days. He was
a member of the Labor Union Local 1104.
He is survived by one son, James Donnell Johnson and
wife Kimberly; one daughter, Kim Johnson, two grandsons
Dusty Johnson and wife Erica, Nathan Rice and wife Selia;
one granddaughter Katie Rice and two great-grandchildren,
Beckett and Delaney Johnson, all of Poplar Bluff.
Visitation well be 10 AM, Saturday, at the First General
Baptist Church on North Main St. The funeral service will
follow at 11 AM at the church. Rev. Dick Murray will
officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Fitch-Hillis
Jan. 8, 2015 at Oakdale Care Center. He was married to
Leta Belle Baumgarter. He was a self-employed bar
owner. He enjoyed bowling and playing softball. He
served the Birmingham Police De3pt. for 10 years. He is
survived by one son, Jerry White of Birmingham, Mi., one
daughter, Janet Stickler of White Lake, Mi., one sister,
Elsie Temple of Dexster, Mo., four grandchildren and ten
Regional Medical Center. She was born July 16, 1919 to
the late Henry White and Addie Hillis White. She lived at
Doniphan for 26 years before moving to Poplar Bluff. She
was of the Lutheran faith. She was a homemaker.
Elsie married Jacob Blum. He preceded her in death
December 27, 1989.
She is survived by two sons, John H. Blum of San
Antonio, Tx., Gene O. Blum of Paragould, Ark.; three
daughters, Marie Freiboth of Chicago, Ill., Else J. Moore
of Gurnee, Ill., Rosemary D. Thomas of Poplar Bluff, Mo.;
17 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and several

Elizabeth Mae Courtney, 86, of 495 Betsy Drive, Todd, NC., passed
away Sunday afternoon, January 18, 2015, at Watauga Medical Center.
Mrs. Courtney was born October 7, 1928 in Corning, Ar., a daughter
of the late John Jackson Alexander and Rosie Cagle Alexander. She
was a homemaker and a long time member and Sunday School
Teacher at Faith Tabernacle Church in Poplar Bluff, Mo.
My mother, known as "Liz" to her friends and neighbors, was a caring
and loving "Mom" and friend. She was raised in an orphanage after
suffering polio as a 4 year old child. She still managed to rear 6
children with one good hand. God gives each one of us a special gift in
life. Her gift was a giving spirit. She cared for her neighbors taking
them food and offering prayers. She didn’t know she was poor but
she shared what she had and God blessed her for it.
The last couple of years, even though she was not able to cook, she
still found a way to give. She loved to embroidery and made beautiful
pillow cases to give almost anyone who crossed her path.
Elizabeth is survived by two daughters, Jacqueline Roberts and
husband Jim of Todd, NC. and Barbara Guignon and her companion,
Gary Grier of St. Charles, Mo., two sons, Kevin Courtney and wife
Shonda of Fisk, Mo. and James Leach of Missouri, and one sister,
Mary Toombs of Poplar Bluff, Mo., eight grandchildren and seven
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband,
Wilbert Eugene Courtney; one daughter, Robin Leach, one son, David
Leach, and several brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be Friday from 11 A.M. to 12 noon. at Fitch-Hillis
Funeral Chapel, followed by the funeral service at 12:00. Rev. Kevin
Courtney will officiate. Burial will be at City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of
the donors choice.
Sarah Jane Boknecht,59, died Jan. 15,2015 at her residence in Poplar
Bluff, Mo. She was Dec. 13, 1955 in Yuma, Az, to the late William Lee
Emerson and Phillis Jane Jeffery Emerson. She was a School teacher
and is survived by one son, Andrew.
